Description

This BLENDED course is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills to perform the duties of the Medical Unit Leader (MEDL) position, as described in the DRAFT NWCG Incident Position Standards for Medical Unit Leader (MEDL), PMS 350-34.

Objectives

Given a scenario and supporting materials, students will be able to demonstrate how to:

  • Plan, staff, and manage the Medical Unit
  • Coordinate with other incident entities and outside entities, as necessary
  • Anticipate and ensure adequate personnel and equipment to respond to medical emergencies and medical evacuation from remote areas
  • Complete all required documentation.

The course is a blended training combining an Online Training (OLT) component and an Instructor-Led Training (ILT) component.

Online component: In the online portion of the course, students explore the knowledge and concepts required to meet the responsibilities of the MEDL from mobilization to various incident changes. Students are required to complete the OLT portion of the course and pass the assessment prior to taking the ILT portion. The OLT should take 3-4 hours to complete.

Instructor-led component: The ILT portion of the course provides scenario-based activities that allow participants to apply the knowledge and concepts required to meet the responsibilities of a MEDL identified in the NWCG Incident Position Standards for Medical Unit Leader (MEDL). Activities will be assessed using NWCG Course Skill Assessments completed by the instructors. There is no final exam for this course beyond the skill assessments.
